Extracts from a 60 minute DVD I have made of a visit to the Isle of Lewis in March 2009 called Blackhouse Weekend, containing video taken around the restored thatched blackhouse village of Gearannan, where we stayed - ancient relics like the pictish broch at Dun Carloway, and the Standing Stones at Callanish and a visit to the town of Stornoway and its castle grounds

  • My moms ancestors the Morrison's are from Lewis they came to America in the 1740's. Thank you so much for this, it's like going home after all these years!!

  • @Bigborewoods

Glad you enjoyed the clip - my grandfather was also a Morrison - he was born at Ness on the northwast coast of the island

  • Brought back memories. I did almost exactly the same trip as this one. Only difference, I sailed from Ullapool to Stornoway first and then visited all the attractions. Definately going to watch many more of your videos.

  • I love Lewis - the Blackhouse village was good value and a great place to stay - I even got a christmas card from them. lovely people - lovely place.

  • @racampbell6 I'm so excited to find this. My GGG grandfather John McLeod came from the village of Gearrannan. He was born in 1815. How wonderful to see this.

  • @noneil100 I am delighted that this meant as much to you as it does to me - my mother was born on Lewis - I love the island and I love the people - I just can't get up there often enough. I am glad you enjoyed the Gearrannan clip.

  • Cool video I love Scotland and it's people, although I am Russian and have never even been to Scotland. I wish one day I will go there and learn more of it's history, all I know now is that they are proud people (oh and by the way, William Wallace is my hero for sure).

  • This was a thoroughly enjoyable video. I was lucky enough to visit Harris and Lewis when I was employed as a land surveyor. I stayed at a lovely guest house in Tarbert owned by Flora Morrison who`s hospitality was second to none. Thanks for posting this. Cheers.

  • I really enjoyed this. Its been a few years since I have been to Lewis. It brought a little tear to my eye as although from London I have strong connections to Lewis and on my many trips to visit have always felt sad when leaving on the ferry or plane. Thanks. It was lovely.

  • @Bigborewoods My website on my profile has lots of photos of Dun Eistean at Ness in Lewis, where the Morrisons used to be based, its an archaeological site but open to the public and connected by a bridge to the mainland.

  • excellent video

  • Looking forward to our fifth visit to Lewis in the summer, beautiful place.

I came across a beautiful old sideshow on youtube about Lewis "Tuigainn Leum - Donald Macrae - Gaidhlig Superstar " , worth having a look at.

Nice video thank you for posting.

  • @racampbell I neglected to tell you that he left the Isle of Lewis as a young man and came to the Pacific Northwest where he worked as the head sheepherder for the Hudson's Bay Company and lived his life in Washington State. He married an Indian princess and has many descendants here now. He tried to go back once but was robbed of all of his money and never got back to Scotland but corresonded with his family there.
