SYNOPSIS: Kens life in fishing started on Lake Illawarra.
SCRIPT: My father used to say I was born to fish. My story is about Buroo Bay in Oak Flats on Lake Illawarra. In 1947 Dad purchased land and this was the first building on the whole estate. We lived in Wollongong. After the war petrol was rationed so we built the fishing shack close to home. The land cost 100 pound. Dad bought a boat for 120 pound (and we called her Mary?). From there on our wonderful days started... The Lake provided a great variety of fish and made for great eating. We fished every weekend. Talk about eels as thick as your leg. We used to shoot them when we caught them to get them out of the water. Native dog reef was our favourite fishing spot in front of native dog hill which became known as Mt Warrigal. (This is the same place today) Anyone who knows Lake Illawarra knows that it comes up very quickly and some days dad came in like a drowned rat. It wasnt all fun and games there were times the hard work needed to be done such as cleaning Marys bottom. And all this was the start of my life in fishing. As an adult I worked in a fishing tackle shop, presented fishing reports in print, radio and television for over 30 years. And on the 10th October 2008, while I was in the process of making this film, it took me half an hour to pull out the largest fish recorded caught in St Georges basin. As my father said some people are born to fish.
