Trad heads are always looking for that perfect instrument. Just the right back pressure, beaut shape, exact sound characteristics you are looking for...
You can often predict an instrument's quality just by visual inspection and by lifting it up and feeling its weight. For example, its shape can tell you what sort of back pressure to expect. However, it isn't until you feel an instrument's weight that you either start to get excited or become disappointed...
When I first saw this yirdaki and its appealing proportions my pulse quickened. When I picked it up and discovered the weight was perfect for the length and proportions, my mind went into overdrive. When I put my lips to the yirdaki and gave it a gentle blow, I knew I'd found something special.
This is a yirdaki made by Bruce Burrngupurrngu Wunungmurra, a name you should know by now if you've been following the trad scene. A biography of Burrngupurrngu can be found here:

I've kept this yirdaki as part of my personal collection because it is just so damn good. I can't fault it on any count... construction is perfect with walls that are not too thin and not too thick. They're uniform throughout and stable, with no areas that look like they might be vulnerable to knocks or bumps.
The bore is perfectly natural throughout and conical in shape.
Acoustics are second to none. Rich, textured, gritty, full-bodied... There is spot-on back pressure that gives outstanding compression and excellent ease of play. Power, resonance, loudness, responsiveness - it's all there in spades.
The decoration is in ochre and is simple, so you won't have to worry about damaging the artwork or pigments coming off on your hands. This is a player's player, for someone who simply wants the best traditional yirdaki they can find. For an F#, I don't think you'll find any better in this moment in time.
I'm selling this yirdaki not because I've found a better Burrngupurrngu F#. I haven't. I figured that since I hardly play yirdaki these days (with much of my time focussed on iDIDJ work) that I should let my instruments go to good homes where they will be enjoyed by others.
