Préludes Book I no. X by Debussy (1910)

This is me playing this piece for my HSC trial examination at Canberra Grammar. I got 13/15, so looking for suggestions.

  • Listening in, and I, too, noticed that you sit very far back from the keyboard. Have you always sat this way, and does it in any way strain your back and shoulders? Also, does this position affect your ability to control the production of the sonorities you wish to summon from the instrument? I would have given you a 14/15. (:-D) Just a a couple of points - the beginning might have been as hushed - but a BIT less slow, and those chords deep in the bass around 2:30 should have been more resonant.

  • Yes, I sit quite far back, as I stated before this was only a trial - thank god I moved in a bit for the actual performance. And in fact I did play the opening section quite a bit faster - but we never get to see any of the marking schemes or anything for the final, just a mark overall. I got in the top band which was good anyway :D

  • Woo-hoo! ^_^ I am really so happy for you! This is such great news, and I wish you all the very best always. Go from strength to strength and keep garnering plaudits for your performances. Please keep me posted as to the new pieces you play, and if my two cents' worth is ever of ANY help, I'll be thrilled to share with you once more. Congratulations, young man, and do play on. And here's wishing you a belated Happy 2009. N.

  • Nice performance.

Well the very first thing I see is posture, are you sitting too far back?

and the very first notes you play, perhaps hold down the keys longer to make the piece appear more delicate. it's small things like this that will get you those extra one or two marks. I just did my trial for HSC a few weeks ago but haven't put it up on youtube as of yet.
