Just off the top of my head, here are some differences in the 'Dark Dear Heart' version:
--It doesn't have the high harmonica part at the beginning --It's more straight singing; Holly sticks closer to the melody and rhythm --In this one she says "Should I lay my head..." and on DDH she says "Could I," which I think is the correct/better lyric --There is no background vocal (as at1:48-2:10) --She sings more quietly, not in volume only, but in feeling too
First heard this song on homicide life on the street---season 7 episode 14 , "a case of do or die",Amy Ryan of the office starred in it. I've finally found the name of it and the artist after 9 years---been searchin so long for it. You gotta see the show, it's about a young couple , one of whom is murdered. The song fits tight as a glove.Long live Berry ,Strummer, Lennon and rock and roll !!
Oh, wow; I used to love that show, and didn't catch that!---I might not have heard of Holly then....anyway, I always thought it was a travesty that Homicide never got the Emmy, it was so great. I still wonder if it was petty jealousy, the TV folks not wanting to give THEIR award to a moviemaker (Barry Levinson) who unlike them could win an Oscar [bigger whoop than an Emmy by several orders of magnitude] some day.
Excellent video. Holly is marvelous with her ability to touch hearts with her voice and presentation. Fantastic lyrics! 10 stars! thank you, for posting this.

Overall I prefer the DDH one.
But oh yeah, Holly Cole. She's the best. End of.
