UPDATE (5/1/2009): LAST REVISION OF THE ARRANGE (MP3):
http://dioxazmusic.free.fr/music/icemountain_act1_retake2.mp3
This one is better mastered, quieter, with different EQ and much more dynamic range (song is rated DR15 by the TT Dynamic Range Meter*). This way it sounds much more like a true late 80s song.
The free VST plugin MDA Multiband has been used for mastering.

-------------------
This is an arrange version of the music for the level Ice Mountain Act 1 from the game Sonic Advance that runs on the Game Boy Advance.
This one is more interesting than the others because I didn't take a MIDI file as a base to make the arrange. I re-created the song from scratch, by ear (but still using Sappy and its channel separation to play the song while identifying the notes, in order to minimize mistakes).
Made by replacing the original GM presets by the following VST instruments or audio tracks:
- 11xVOPM
- 8xYamaha RY30 drum samples
- 4xlayers
Another arrange that should make an excellent demo for the softsynth VOPM! Actually, it only uses 4-operators sounds (just like your good old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive) and hear by yourself how good it sounds (of course, there's polish and a lot of tracks, which helps a lot in fact).
It sounds a bit repetitive because I didn't add anything particular to the song and its progression, except some string chords and additional drums here and there. The melody just repeats as it does in the game.
Some will notice that this arrange shares a bare resemblance with how Ice Mountain Act 1 sounded in my sound hack, Sonic Advance FM Remix. This is because I used here similar sounds to the ones I used for my hack back in the day.
Another thing, I actually used this arrange as a base for the MIDI versions I uploaded on VGMusic. Nothing less! So, some of you may have already heard it when I posted both the MP3 and the MIDI versions on the VGMusic forums.
If you have remarks, suggestions or anything else to say about the arrange, please let me know.

damn that bass is awesome, it sounds like a real 80s song. Almost what the Genesis soundchip would sound like if it had higher sound quality
did you buy the VST sounds you used in this song cause it doesnt sound like the shitty FL Studio presets lol

Thank you. ^^
No, I didn't buy anything. I simply used some of the presests that came with VOPM (fxb files). That bass sound is "Slap bass 1". It is probably a rip from some arcade or Genesis game.
Other sounds are either made from scratch (the bell, one of the easiest sounds to make in FM, and the string pads) or ripped from Sonic 2 (the brass sound).

Thank you for pointing it out. I've updated the description of the video accordingly. I also took the opportunity to make another and more dynamic mastering.

Awesome! I love the bass especially--it's very twangy, which gives it a unique, upbeat feel that's hard to come across outside of FM sounds.

Thanks. Glad you liked it too. ^^
I like that bass sound very much too. It reminds me a DX7mkII preset named "Superbass". This is in fact a preset found in one of the various VOPM soundbanks (in FXP format, the "tone" folder).
Those soundbanks come with the softsynth by default. They actually contain many useful and excellent sounds (most may be portage from different games).
