This is a whole host of techniques used for portrait retouching. Get smooth flawless skin, remove wrinkles and brighten eyes. Whilst the tutorial is very fast moving many of the techniques can be used inn more detail to get some fantastic results. Its all non destructive and uses many layers. Thats why Mike is the best Photoshop User ever! Even he he does say so himself.

  • i understand "quick retouch, but really any blur, even soft gaussian blur on a 10-15% opacity level over an image removes too much detail. retouching blemishes&wrinkles when appropriate is fine, but humans skin has pores and little peach fuzz hairs.

time spent at 100-125 zoom panning around the entire image with the spot healing brush is well spent - takes care of problem areas of skin without making the subject look plastic.

thanks for the vid, but i worry it'll lead people to mediocrity.

  • @bertomartin Yeah all good points, I agree that this is a certain style of retouching that perhaps isn't for everyone, but its certainly a popular look. Just about every layer I used is adjustable right down to including the camera raw file as a smart object. So all things in moderation is the best way to go. But Spending time and the heal brush is for sure the best way.

As we say in AUS its horses for courses mate.

Great to get your feedback at least in a positive way :-)

  • Hey this video seems to controversial to some people. Make sure you watch the whole thing before you comment. in 14 mins I show a whole bunch of techniques, that can be adjusted to any level or used or not depending on the images. If I were retouching this particular image for lets say a publication, I would do many things differently and spend quite a bit more time and effort on it.

Oh and in the spirit of CSTV lets try and positive people!

  • awesome Mike! Just did it to a photo and llooks amazing

  • ive actually seen quiet alot of videos about retouching and ive found that almost all of them use gaussian blur , surface blur , dodge, burn and layer modes but yours was the first one ive seen to use the 50% gray overlay instead of dodge and burn so thats pretty cool. and as for the texture well like the vid sez you can always turn the opacity down to get some of that texture back :). but of course nothing beats spending time on your photo. keep it up thx

  • @Daeos You sound so humble - bubbling with humility. Nary a whiff of odourous ego in the air. Shine on - you crazy diamond.

  • Deaos and mr667. Wow! Surprised you guys had time to watch this. Let alone comment on it. You guys are like the batman and robin running around saving the world with Photoshop! You guys are photo-tactic! Kapow!

  • @mchughm1 i'd hoped you hadn't taken that rough after i read through some of the other comments. most of my workflow focuses on getting the image i want between the camera and lights used, then small adjustments in lightroom. i used to use photoshop exclusively, but found myself leaning more and more on LR.

PS is still essential for some retouching bits, and i'd never thought of starting with a camera raw file as smart object. clever, that. does cs5 play nice with DNGs as smart objects?

  • Mike: as always you are entertaining and informative. As an intermediate user I learn something new every episode. Don't change a thing.
