Andy Irvine plays his version of Woody Guthrie's "The Ballad of Tom Joad". I found this on YT and it has since disappeared, so I thought I'd upload it :)

  • Dear Friends, I hate to tell you but this is out of sync! nearly until the end! If you watch my mouth you can see that the vocal is fractionally delayed. I don't know how this happened but I'd be really grateful if someone with a better video could put it up and replace this one.

    Your remarks, however, are hilarious!!

I had flown in from Japan to Dublin and went straight to O'Donoghues at 10 am to do this. Still, I'm sure I managed to play and sing in sync!!

  • @andykirvine Hey, thanks for the comment! That's the only version of it I have I'm afraid, but of course if someone else has a version properly in sync then it would be great if they could upload it. I have no idea about copyright or origin for this video... any ideas Andy? I just downloaded it from someone else's account and when it disappeared from there, I uploaded my copy. It's possible that's where the mis-sync has originated.

  • SUPERB Andy, thanks for posting Frances.

  • No probs, I'm just glad I downloaded it before the previous one was removed, so I could "reinstate" it.

  • Brilliant playing isn't it? I love this so much.

  • Andy, this is great man. I met you in Newfoundland at the Folk Festival 3 year ago.

    Great job.

  • Andy

How did you manage to get thru the different passport controls in the different countries without hassle?

Are you that famous smeg or no smeg?

  • @andykirvine

I always put it down to the lack of beard.

Without the extra weight, the voice couldn't keep up with the newly liberated jaw. Either way, the performance is lovely and suitably iconic.

Thank you for your great music!

  • Ooh Lord! Only just noticed the beard... after reading all the comments. Nil points for observation...

  • @andykirvine Beautiful! Captured the emotion so well...when you gonna return to the land of Tom Joad in the USofA? Would love to see this live (and in sync! :P)

  • 24 and a half thousand isnt too bad at all andy boy

  • Like this cover!

    Thnaks

  • Magnifique! je passe et repasse cette vidéo sans jamais m'en lasser! Andy Irvine est exceptionnel de talent tant sur le point instrumental que vocal.

  • @andykirvine Hi, I saw this a week or two ago on BBC3/4. My jaw nearly dropped. Recognised A.Irvine voive, but the guitar playing really caught the eye too. Should've bothered my arse to see you live before now, next chance I get I will...Love the Planxty stuff too.

  • Hello FrancisB1977, The recording was done for a BBC 3 or 4 programme. I think it was called Folk Britannica about British Folk Scene history. I can't say where it got out of sync! Not to worry. Look out for a series on BBC 3 or 4 called The History of Ireland. I did about four songs for that. Andy
