This is a quick video on how to make a good sized homemade parachute rocket flare. I used sugar rocket propellant in the motor and the flare is 75% ammonium perchlorate with 25% magnalium powder.

How do you use (in grams) of gunpowder to eject the parachute?

I used NH4NO3 I think. You might try KNO3, but always be very careful. Some oxidizers can explode with Mg/Al. Use a larger amount of Mg/Al for bright slow burns.
