NKP 765 - High Stepping in Illinois!

On July 22, 2011, we chased Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 on a 100+ mile roundtrip from Rock Island, Illinois to Bureau Junction, Illinois and back over the Iowa Interstate Railroad for Train Festival 2011. Enjoy this Lima Berkshire rolling the flatlands of central Illinois at speeds of more than 45 miles per hour, her fastest excursion since the completion of her 2nd rebuild in 2005 and since the New River Trains in 1993. Bar none, my favorite chase yet!

@nkp765ful IMO this was better than her Owosso runs. I rode one of those trips and we did about 30mph max, I believe. It was pretty awesome pacing her at 50+ along Route 6...

The crew was pretty happy with this run. 51 mph was reached, just short of our planned goal of 60 mph! This festival was a week of first for our crew. 10 consecutive days in a row under steam, reached the highest speeds with a revenue earning train since the new river days, and crossed the mighty Missisippi River for the first time ever in 765's life!
