  • Interesting to compare Burton's rendition to that of Thomas. Both men loved poetry and the English language. Each was superbly sensitive to rhythm and the sound of words.

    Having said so, Burton's version is the more dramatic. But the poet's reading of his great poem strikes me as more poignant.

    Perhaps it comes down to these two superb voices. There was silk in Burton's, yet his instrument was primarily brass. Thomas commanded a sound just as rich, but warmer:) -
