He never claimed that it was his original version. David Cook told everyone that he wanted something different and he liked Chris Cornells version. He is not stealing, they are not allowed to use new material.  They have to use previously recorded songs. So they are not stealing covers. When the judges say original they are saying he is not taking the popular version, he is trying something different.

On top of the fact he did credit Cornell, let's not forget that the 1st single off his album was written by Cornell AFTER Idol so obviously Cornell didn't mind...David was original because he always made the songs his own and his voice was incredible...let's not forget "Hello" ...I believe Lionel Ritchie called and said he loved David's version...David has tons of orig music...Analog Heart, all the Axium albums but he is also the KING of covers hands down
