My mom has always been hard of hearing, and used hearing aids. All her family and friends and everyone she knows has been hearing, and she doesn't know Sign or anyone Deaf. She's learned that in ten years, she will be completely deaf. Do you all think it would be worth it to her to try now to learn a new language, and become part of a new culture?

  • If your really against going deaf then get an coclear implant.

  • Yes. She should start learning sign language.

  • it is entirely her decision, but as for my humble opinion...i would encourage her to learn sign. it's a wonderful language, she would meet more people, and compared to the cost of getting a CI, it's practically free.

  • I'm just a random hearing person, but if I were your Mom, I would start learning, and I would also have everyone else in the family learn too. It's a beautiful language and a beautiful culture. There are so many people she could get to know in the deaf community that she wouldn't get to know otherwise: for that reason alone, it would be worth it.

  • when you ask if it is worth it to be a part of a new culture..that is obvious that she should. ASL is a great form of communication. And its great that I see you signing. Your mother would be able to still communicate with you and I think other close family members to her should learn asl as well.

  • ya its really her choice... learning ASL would be benificial to her but she could also look in to an implant.

  • My cousin grew up hard of hearing with no sign language, just oral. Then, when she was an adult, she lost all her hearing. So, she got a cochlear implant and she LOVES it. She can hear more than ever before! It is not for everyone, and I know that many Deaf oppose it, but for that kind of situation it can be perfect. She can talk to her Dr. about the right options for her. But learning ASL never hurts!

  • If I were her I would start learning ASL right away. And, I would consider a cochlear implant. Both.

  • Sign is a great language, but you should explore the possibilities of a cochlear implant. They have been very successful for people who have hearing all their lives, and then lost their hearing. Rush Limbaugh got one.

  • Yes, she should try to learn sign language.
