Chapter 2

He was strange and this made me even more interested in him but it was like talking to a brick wall. Every time I asked him a question he would just evade me, each minute was a minute I would get provoked. Soon I’d had enough and just left the table, why wouldn’t just talk to me. It was very irregular.

“So how’d it go?” Natalie asked me with a sly smile on her face.
“How do you think it went? It was like talking to a brick wall. He was so desolate, you know?”
“Listen, Alex why don’t you just give it up? He obviously doesn’t like talking to people so just let him be. Besides you know Robert likes you.”
“Tell me something I don’t know, we’re just friends but,” I turned to look at the silent guy again. “he’s more interesting.”
“You think everyone’s interesting.”
“Not true.” Robert had just sat down across from me with a smile; he began to endulge us with converesation. Constantly talking about Mr.Keif and his bi polar habits and what the lunch lady had told him. Sometimes I would tune into the conversation but I was still curious about this guy, watching him. Wishing that he would have at least said something to me.
“And then I swear I could see two horns rise above his head, it was unreal.” Robert had just concluded his story and everyone was crying their eyes out, apparently I had just missed out on a great story. He turned to look at me and smiled. “So, Alex, everyone’s going to the movies after school. Be there or be square?”
“Sorry, I have lot’s of work to do.”
“Oh, come on Alex just let loose, express yourself.” Jackie said while shifting in her seat to rest her arm around my shoulder. I turned towards her and grinned.
“Yeah, there’s no party if you’re not there.” Everyone cried in unison, they always had to do this to me. Was there ever a night after school that we didn’t do anything?
“Please, Alex. I’ll be happy if you go.” Robert said with a reconciled look on his face.
“Bow chika, wow wow.” Johnny murmured from behind his hand, Robert just laughed and continued to look at me. Again why must this happen to me. I turned to see the silent guy staring at us when he saw me he looked back down again. Tomorrow I would try to hold a longer conversation with him and hopefully he would give me answers.

After school ended we all went to the movies as planned but we got there fifteen minutes late, my constant protesting held us back. Apparently everyone wanted to see a movie about a guy who only has a phsycho man trying to kill his wife and hiself but I insisted we’d see a movie about a dog that changes a family’s life. They won. It was a waste of two hours and ten minutes, everyone else thought the same as well.

“I mean come on it was a terrible plot. The couple goes to a gas station, they come out and a phsycho is chasing after them, but at the end of it all it’s happily ever after. So moronic.” Natalie finshed off the last of her pocorn and tossed it in the trash.
“Yeah, plus the girl in the movie wasn’t even worth saving. I mean wouldn’t you rather risk your life for a very good-looking woman then for a beastly animal.” Everyone stared at Johnny as he made his ill-favored statement.
“That’s not nice Johnny, plus I told you guys we should’ve seen the movie about the dog, but no you guys wanted to see a terribly gory movie.” I said while exiting the theater. All I wanted to do was sleep and when I got home that’s exactly what I did….

I saw him again in the same area of the lunchroom the next day, still in the same hunched position. This time I wouldn’t wait to go over; now I’m going to just sit with him for the rest of the lunch period. As I set my tray down on the table he looked up at me.
“So are you going to tell me your name or do I have to butcher it out of you?,” I wanted to get straight to the point and he clearly understood that. “Sorry, a little fast forward.”
“It’s Kiyo.”
“Kiyo,” I repeated. “Neat.”
He watched me, and after a moment, a smile danced over his mouth. A really nice mouth too. “You’re trying to figure me out.”
“Figure you out how?”
“What I am. Race. Ethnic group. Whatever.”
“Of course not,” I protested, even though I’d been trying to do exactly that.
“My mother is Japanese, and my father is Latino. Kiyo is short for Kiyotaka.” I stared at him in amazment the conversation lasted for at least one minute, much longer than yesterday and I was in no mood to stop there.
“So are you new here?”
He looked up at me in astonishment. “I’ve been going here since freshman year.”
“How strange, I know everyone in the school. How come I didn’t notice you?”
“Perhaps you didn’t look hard enough.”
“Perhaps,” He smiled that beautiful smile again and looked back down. Toying with his food again. “So, why do you sit here, you know all alone?”
“I don’t correspond with others well.” He stared at me.
