  • Thanks so much for posting this! This brings her wonderfully to life. Great article about MA in the New Yorker April 13, 2009.

  • Wow!!...a woman before her time. She was soo eloquent..so sad society couldn't accept her at the time only because of the color of her skin...People can be soooo ignorant!!! so dumb..America ought to be ashamed...She was respected more in Europe and abroad than here in America..

  • Marian Anderson had such an amazing range. Hear her sing "Ave Maria", and you would think it a diferent singer!

Btw, I think she is becoming popular at the right time. With the opening-up of the east of Europe, we are being gob-smacked by the many beautiful contraltos, coming from there...hitherto unknown because of the stupid cold war. Now, they can be heard; Marian Anderson's voice can now be fully appreciated. It/she has at last come of age, in the west/white community...AND via Ytube...

  • I saw Marian Anderson in Salvador, Bahia in the early fifties

  • I had never heard of Marian Anderson until Jessye Norman spoke about her. So I started investigating, and found I had some of her songs on some old CD's. Now I have started collecting. One of those voices that had a global impact. Many would like to have it, but few do. Marian Anderson certainly did. I'm glad there is so much of her material around. Thank you for posting this.

  • If I had a hammer...

    What exceptional talent!!!

  • She was always beautifully gowned; much more so than her Caucasian contemporaries.

  • @hudson19947 I agree totally with your statement. All black opera singers of the time were treated the same way. You know she was a contralto and singing these high notes? Can you imagine the contributions she could have made?

  • wow.
