Lecture 6 Pt.2

Jim continues talking about the development and use of interrupted bass lines. Jim discusses Eubie Blake's use of this pianistic device prior to the "stride era".If you want to hear the complete piano solo of "Troublesome Ivories" as played by Eubie Blake and as played by Jim Hession you can find that on YouTube. Jim talks about "Bojangles of Harlem", the Jerome Kern music that Fred Astaire danced to in "Swing Time". You can find Jim's piano solo of Bojangles of Harlem on YouTube.

  • Can You Explain Curtain Elements of Jelly Roll Morton?

  • Yes, I am thinking about what I could share with young musicians interested in Jelly Roll. Jelly's music has always been one of my favorite traditional jazz styles. I will put some thought into sharing some observations and concepts of Morton's music.

  • Hi Jim,

Just wondering, are you left handed?

  • No, but Jim bats left handed and shoots baskets left handed. I guess you could say he is ambidextrous.
