Chechnya: The beating of Malika Soltayeva, 2006

This is a piece of cellphone footage filmed sometime between March and September 2006 by the Chechnyan kadyrovtsy (Chechen security forces loyal to pro-Moscow Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov) showing them humiliating and beating a Muslim woman, Malika Soltayeva, who was alleged to have had an affair with a Russian soldier. In the clip, we see that Mrs Soltayeva has had her head and eyebrows shaved, and her scalp painted green. The kadyrovtsy have also painted a green crucifix on her forehead. The clip documents the moment prior to her release, when the soldiers take her into the street, and force her to dance in front of a crowd of her neighbours. A further set of footage obtained by the New York Times shows the soldiers shaving Mrs Soltayeva's head and eyebrows, painting her face, and abusing her during her interrogation. Mrs Soltayeva was pregnant at the time of the incident, and shortly afterwards suffered a miscarriage.

Its interesting that apologists and supporters of Russian brutality in Chechnya argue the Russian military was fighting to protect people from Islamic fanatics. As we can clearly see, the Kremlin's Chechen lackeys are no less fanatical than what they accuse the Chechen rebels of being.
