In case you're fretting, GZ-HM30 = GZ-HM30BUS. The "BUS" part just stands for the color of the camera, "black".

A brief test video showing raw, uncolored footage from the JVC Everio GZ-HM30BUS. Some of the clips shown are played at 50% regular speed. These slow motion clips simply show the slow-motion capability of this consumer camcorder. I have mixed different speeds together, so if you get confused and would like to know which is which, just leave a comment and I can tell you.

My thoughts:

Simple, small, smart, and colorful. I ran across this camera from a relative of mine, and although its been out for a while, I had to pick it up for my own use ASAP. The color with this camcorder is astounding. The 1280x720p is amazing for those of us who have been stuck with standard definition for the longest time. The audio isn't half-bad, though if you have a quiet event you need to shoot or scene to film, beware of zooming - it will pick that up in the audio.

More importantly, for advanced video consumers, this HD line from JVC ONLY shoots in 60 (59.94) frames per second. A regular consumer might not notice this, let for the fact that the playback on a TV looks "like real life!". Yeah, double 30p and you'll get that. I edited these 60p clips in a 30p timeline, for the sake of 50% slow motion, so some may not notice, but uploaded to YouTube, you can see "ghosting" on the normal motion clips. Just pause the video at a regular motion clip and yes, slight ghosting appears.

This, is the one major con to this camcorder. Fortunately, I have an obsession with shooting in slow motion and tweaking things even slower with 60p as a base for shooting. If you are stuck with this camera, whatch my tutorial on my channel that can show you how to convert 60p footage directly to 30p regular motion, no over-cranking.

Another con I guess would also be the button layout. My old SD Everio had a little joystick on the flip out screen that I could control focus, brightness, etc with. This new HD line doesn't have that. You have to navigate via buttons tucked away on the inside of the camera body.

Oh, and the camera can only turn on when you flip open the adjustable screen, and will shut off once you close...or power off with a battery saver option.

Another pro: Time Lapse mode! On this you can set the camera to take either 1sec, 2sec, 4sec, 10sec, and some other intervals (pictures per second) between pictures, to which the camera records as a single video file for easy playback in editing. However, the pictures taken are at 720p, which is ok, but not a terribly great resolution for still photography.

You might notice that I do some zooming in the video. The zooms I conduct never go farther than the 40x optical zoom, so nothing in this video is digital zoom. It is difficult to hold the camera still when zoomed in that far, considering it is a very light camera.

The output file, .MTS , is I think an HD related video file that works with the new versions of Premiere Pro. Caution: I would transcode your raw footage from this camera. .MTS straight to Adobe CS4 is a bit glitchy. I get better results transcoding to an Animation Quicktime codec .MOV before editing.

However, there is a disc that comes with the kit that allows you to easily import your video to your PC, and probably edit it using their 3rd party software or something. I don't do this, simply because I know what I want and how to get it done my way.

Anyways, great picture, slow motion capability, color, and portability. As well as price! I use this camera all the time in unison with my Canon T3i as a backup shot. Pretty handy for fast paced action ( rolling shutter issue isn't that bad either!, just don't manhandle it, refer to 2:05 for some slight rolling shutter).

Hope this was helpful.

Check out Cnet.com, Google, or just call up JVC for more clarification on what you can and can't do with this camera.

Thanks for watching!
Enjoy

  • @kudjo24 thank you!!

  • @kudjo24 thanks so much for the help! :) cool video, it was actually interesting unlike other test videos where people record their garden...hahha

  • @ayirocks lol well, if you can learn how to properly import footage, it should be easy. install the disk that comes with the camera, that should have a program that imports the .MTS files. you might need software to convert it with, though, if you're editor doesn't supprt AVCHD (.MTS) formats
