  • I've never seen this movie, but I have seen an affair to remember, and I'm confused... are they the same story?

  • yes : ) same story and also similar conversation ! the dialog from finale scene of both of movies are very similar ! It's kinda funny to compared to each other ~ Point is, both of them are really good movies..♥

  • I watched this version after having seen the Grant-Kerr one many times. Watching this one was a revelation. Kerr now seems brittle and too precious compared to Dunne who was a better actress. More real, not sentimental and cloying. Grant was Grant - charming, funny but not really noted for his dramatic ability. Boyer has more depth and yet is more subtle. In this scene he really shows the slow dawning awareness of her predicament and his silent sorrow is stunning in its realism.

  • One of the most romantic scenes from the golden year of 1939, and two such wonderful stars. Thank you

  • I love Grant, but I prefer this version by far... apart from the fact that Irene Dunne is always wonderful, the script for AATR was such an exact copy that you have moments that make no sense, such as Kerr singing. Dunne was a fine singer, but Kerr had to be dubbed! Why not just change the character?!

Having said that, AATR is still my third favourite 'meeting at the top of the Empire State Building' movie!

And I think I agree that Grant's "realisation scene" is marginally more effective.

  • @1915fas I did not know until now Affair to Remeber was a remake identical script and similar direction. While I haven't seen this version all the way through, I must defend Cary's performance. I think he was really splendid and his realisation scene spoke much more than Boyer's did. Cary achieved more emotional impact in a fraction of the time that Boyer was given. It was like the director of Love Affair was telling Boyer to let the evolution of his emotions show in a montage, Cary was

  • I was always a big fan of the Grant/Kerr version, but once I watched this version, I lost my nostalgic love for the remake. This version, the acting, everything comes off so much better in this version. Not surprised it was a '39 film. It is hard for me to admit that I prefer Boyer's performance to Grant's because Grant is one of my fave all time actors. I've never really been a fan of Kerr, though. But had liked her in AATR. 1939 was a great year for great movies.

  • And Irene Dunne was absolutely amazing in every movie I've seen her in. Her bio is fascinating. She was an absolutely excellent actress...one of the best.

  • I first saw An Affair to Remember as a kid. I loved it, and Cary Grant is my favorite actor. But when I saw Love Affair, I was stunned with how An Affair to Remember just paled in comparison! I LOVED Love Affair!! And then when I watched Affair to Remember again, it just seemed all wrong!!

They were both done by the same director, over a decade apart. I find that amusing because Cary Grant and Irene Dunne starred together in several films, but each were in this movie 18 years apart!

  • @1915fas agreed to every word!

  • This is the original and the best. Charles Boyer, what an amazing actor. I love Irene Dunne in everything i've seen her in. Why, oh why, do they remake old movies if they can't do it better? I'm thinking of, among others, "The Women",which was a 1930's classic and the remake in 2008 was horrible. Thank goodness they haven't tried to remake "Binging Up Baby", "My girl Friday" or the Hepburn-Tracy classics. I would die.
