Prompted by a desire for an outdoor space where she could teach astronomy, Young began the Sunwheel project in 1992. She says it was a grass roots effort that began with start-up funding from the university and moved forward thanks to private donations and a National Science Foundation grant. Today, more than 20,000 people have signed the guestbook and the Sunwheel has become a place where school children, the general public and international visitors come to look at and learn about the sky.
