Bo, the parrot (sun conure) is self trained on this issue. He goes in the trash can next to his cage, His owner would be embarrassed to tell you how seldom his cage gets cleaned. It's always spotless. He can be counted on to not go in the wrong place, never on furniture or people.
He figured it out by himself, but I'm sure positive reinforcement has a lot to do with it.
