  • So sad to another proper english ground go.

I so much prefer the older grounds to the modern ones, they feel so much better. Like a football ground should.

  • New, identikit, out-of-town, all-seater stadia have nothing to do with British football heritage, and are built for profiteers not supporters. In Ireland the fans protested about redevelopment of a stand at Croke Park, and it was kept as terracing. In Germany fans stated their desire to stand, and terracing is still prevalent in the top flight, with affordable tickets. Why in this country have we sat in silence and let places like Layer Road, and with them the soul of English football, die?

  • Great film, love the 'old footage'.

Only went there once, (we lost 5-1, Blades fan), but really love the 'old grounds'. So sad to see the demise of such places as the Baseball ground, Roker Park etc, and now Layer rd.

Suppose the U's are moving to another 'plastic / macdoalds building type of ground. However, I wish you luck in your new stadia, and wish you a speedy return to the Championship.

    Up the Blades !!!!.

  • i dont want to leave :(

    todays gonna be really emotional.

    end of an era

  • Outstanding video. Gives people like myself a chance to see how Layer Road has changed down the years. Started going to Layer Road in 95 & can remember the then derelict open terrace Clock End. Looked a cracker of a stand with the dividing fence down the middle, would have loved to have had the chance to stand there. Very sad that Layer Road will soon be no more, Saturday will be a highly emotional day. R.I.P Layer Road, thanks for the memories, u will be sorely missed.

  • What an awesome piece of footage! Saturday April 26th 2008 is going to be a very emotional day. Am looking forward to it in so many ways but think they'll need to drag me off T3 kicking & screaming!! Sunglasses at the ready...

  • oh my days!! how!!??? I can't believe that Saturday will be the last ever time I will the U's play at Layer road.....yes we are getting a brand new stadium and from what I've seen of it looks good I just can't get this messed up feeling out of my head, it as if I feel guilty?!! oh well R.I.P my second home the one and only Layer road xxx

  • From the days when my dad played for the U's, i still feel sympathy for the old girl and saturday will be a big emotional day for the Us fans

  • r.i.p x

  • I agree with your sentiment, eJasminde. Unfortunately there is a new generation of English fans who do not concern themselves with the "soul of English football", as you so nicely put it. The drive to leave Layer Rd and build a new stadium was initiated and sustained by the U's fans. Once Col U reached the dizzy heights of the second tier - bringing the ambition to compete at a whole new level - the choice between identikit and heritage became stark.
