Jackson's version is a bit too action-oriented, and also too literal.
Tolkien's world is a lot more surreal than Jackson makes it. Bakshi, for all his flaws, understood that better. Telling the opening in shadow shows that perfectly - this is a story where everything threatening is literally in shadow.
