Heathrow Song is the fourth in a series of original compositions. Gary Twitchett composed the music and Graham Smith wrote the lyrics.

This composition was originally entitled Kaoris Song. The lyrics were written in 1979 by Garys friend, Graham Smith for their mutual female friend, Kaori from Japan! After spending two years in England, Kaori flew out of London Heathrow back to her homeland. Graham was so touched by her departure that he set out to write this great set of lyrics. And indeed, he did accomplish that mission!

After Graham wrote the lyrics, he sent them to Gary, requesting Gary to compose the melody portion of the song. Gary reviewed the lyrics, removed the last verse and retitled the composition Heathrow Song. His logic for the changes was the song would have more mass appeal.

The inspiration for the song was The Hollies Magic Woman Touch, and Queens Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together).

This is the Demo version (1979). It was recorded on a Sony Reel-to Reel, featuring Gary performing alone, singing all of the 3-part vocal harmonies, 12 string acoustic guitar and tambourine. The airport/airplane sound effects were supplied by a 1960s BBC sound affects record!

  • @ ytgibbo: thanks again rich. Funny you should mention CSNY, 'Heathrow' was influenced by the Hollies "Magic Woman Touch" probably the nearest sound they got to CSNY. A Big thanks to Cheri at CCF for all her hard work and effort in uploading my songs, Thankyou.

  • Liking this a lot Gary. Your harmonies are lovely, difficult to do those close together ones too. Very Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young-esque. Lovely chord progressions too, with the touching sentiment behind it all. Nice work as usual. Rich
