@noqa Dracula is not and never was Universals copyright, he is a character that belonged to Bram Stoker, and now belongs to no one in particular. The unique design of a Romanian vampire with an intense stare, slicked back hair and high collared black cape is a trademark that belongs to Universal, but Copyright and Trademark are two totally different cans of beans. The ownership status of a trademark does not directly affect the copyright ownership of a film it happens to appear in.

Dracula the novel is in public domain. The movie starring Bela Lugosi is copyright by Universal.

Dracula, on the other hand, is still under copyroghtby Universal Pictures, and will remain so for as long as they can hold it
