THIS IS, NOTE FOR NOTE, THE ORIGINAL RECORDING FROM "JAZZ, RED, HOT, AND BLUE...WITH THE REVLON LADY IN THE RED DRESS DRAPED ACROSS THE PIANO, 1955. STILL GOT THE ALBUM, DEZ'S SOLO WAS ONE OF MY FIRST PUT TO MEMORY. THANKS!!

The silken sounds of Paul Desmond, Brubeck's minimalist piano style here and the artful brushes of Joe Dodge....this is the quartet at their best. They positively dance through this song!

I bought Dave Brubeck at Newport Jazz Festival recorded in 1956. The album cover mentions ' Jazz: Red Hot and Cool CL699. This cover was printed in 1956 so, sounds like Musicman95 knows what he is talking about. I started buying Brubeck Quartet albums in 1954 and still have all of them. Play them once in a while and remember my youth.

I've been looking for this, so pretty..thanks!

I remember this recording. My late father loved "Cool Jazz" and I remember he bought this album in 1956; The album is: "Jazz Red Hot and Cool" recorded live in a certain club in New York City in 1954. I enjoyed listening to this cut when I was seven years old in 1956.
Later in 1965 I bought "The Time Farther Out" to listen to Joe Morello's drumming because I was a jazz drummer at age sixteen.

Music Man is correct - this piece (Lover) was recorded at Basin Street club in New York in 1954. Besides Brubeck and Desmond it features Joe Dodge on drums and Bob Bates on bass. It's from his Jazz: Red Hot and Cool album

yup. he also did this on "Kathy's Waltz" on the album Time Out. With Joe Morello on board, Brubeck's group was experimenting this as a prelude to their later first time signature work(time out in 1959). The idea here was that three bars of 2/2 are in sync with two bars of 3/4 where both the drum beat and bassist would always come together at the downbeat of 3/4 every two bars. This allowed Paul and Dave to be rhythmically more free and adventurous in their improvisations.

It looks like my mistake as you say the notes are confusing. Also the drums don't have the same sound that you get when Joe is on the sticks.

I fear your information is not correct. This was recorded in 1955, not '65. The bassist is Bob Bates, and the drummer is Joe Dodge. Found on the Columbia album Jazz: Red Hot & Cool.
