The tale of this game begins before the start of the game, much as it did for last game. The Pumas walked into The Yard with a different type of swagger tonight, one that only a brand new t-shirt can provide. The team was met by a few chuckles and the obvious, "They have t-shirts!" Another facet of pregame was a conversation with Los Mochis Muebles. Upon hearing the Pumas' team name/seeing our uniforms, one player remarked, "Oh, we've heard about you guys. We've heard y'all are the most intense team in this wiffleball league." A marvelous puff of wind to the Pumas' sails. The Pumas began the game as the visiting team and started off with the usual smallball. Lucian "One-handed" Grove laid down a textbook bunt, followed by a Ryan "Slow Starter" Loose scorcher off the right field netting. This rally was sparked next by a Kemper "Scoreless inning streaker" Steffe single and another by Yates "He's Huge!" Sayers. The rally was eventually broken after Locher "Twinkletoes" Grove popped out and Will "Terrible Baserunner" Kaufman was doubled off first. However, the Pumas did not have to settle for just 2, as they blasted through a quick 1-2 bottom of the first and they were hacking again. The top of the second began with a line drive single by Lucian "Homerless" Grove and followed again by another single by Ryan "Bat flip" Loose. Steffe and Sayers played copy cat and added singles of their own, loading the bases for Will "A - for Arby's" Kaufman. Kaufman connected on a high arching smash to right which landed softly in the right field netting - a Grand Salami. The Pumas added a number of runs on through aggressive baserunning and smallball and had a huge lead (11-0) going into the bottom of the second. The T-Birds acted like a broken record, going 2 up, 2 down in the second. Now to the top of the 3rd, and the Pumas, wearing their brand new t-shirts, seemed to be dragging a bit. However, after being inspired by Ryan "Coach Luis" Loose's pearl, "Let's pick it up, we're dragging", the Pumas dug in and went to the task of putting the game out of reach. The inning was started - as is tradition - by a Lucian "Still zero home runs" Grove bunt single. With Grove on first, Ryan "I iced by elbow" Loose blasted a long bomb off the back wall to catapult the Pumas in the third. The homer was followed again by a single from Kemper "Single or home run" Steffe and a ground rule double from Yates "My dad booed me tonight" Sayers. With runners on second and third, Will "I had like 1,120 rbis tonight" Kaufman belted his second potaaaato of the ballgame - this time ripped off the back wall. Locher "He definitely takes it seriously" Grove started the rally again with some aggressive baserunning - he eventually ended at third. He was driven in by Lucian "Greatest catcher never to catch a pop-up" Grove and that was followed by yet another smoked single off the bat of Ryan "THE Puma" Loose. Kemper "This time it's a home run" Steffe ripped a 1-1 offering, which barely snuck over the line for a three run jackson. The lead was now 19-0. The inning ended after another couple of runs via smallball. Kemper "Cy Young Candidate" Steffe and the Pumas defense made quick work of the T-Birds in the bottom of the third and they were ready to stroke again. Yates "Mr. Consistent" Sayers started the action with another double, followed soon after by a Will "Hat Trick" Kaufman blast that also cleared the netting in right field and smacked again off the back wall. The inning ended quickly after a Ryan "Spiked the bat" Loose strike out. The lead was now 24-0 - going into the bottom of the 4th. The T-birds put up a bit of a fight in the frame, but hopes of scoring were snuffed out when a line drive was snagged by Yates "Get Up - No Need" Sayers. The fireworks began again in the top of the 5th. The Pumas plated a couple with back to back to back singles from Sayers, Kaufman, and Locher "Green Shoes" Grove. The inning also contained 2 more home runs from Ryan "I gotta get to double digits" Loose, a bunt from Lucian and probably more singles from Kemper "Videographer's biggest fan" Steffe and Yates "Don't jinx him" Sayers. The Pumas entered the bottom of the fifth determined to seal the shut out. After a bobble by Locher "He would have still hit a home run" Grove, the heavy hitter for the T-Birds smoked a ball that left the field of play so quickly that it left the fans saying, "I didn't even see that ball". Of course, this meant the end of the shut out and the end of Kemper "Asbestos" Steffe's scoreless inning streak. The game, however, was well in hand and ended on a pop-up to Locher "Always sure-handed" Grove. Victory - Pumas, 28-2.
