Chocolate Syrup's absolute beginning is unknown, but the majority of the members who began recording under the moniker for Ira Records in 1970 had New York City roots with the exception of Frank Avery from Pittsburgh (formerly with the La-Rells). The other alumni were Norris Harris, Carl Smith, Leonard Wolfe, and James Holiday. A 17-year-old L.J. Reynolds replaced Avery after Chocolate Syrup's first Ira single, "Stop Your Crying."

  • @mitkar77 I sure would like to touch base with Mitch Brathwaite. Mitch was my next door neighbor and mentor when we lived uptown in the Bronx on Decatur Ave. He had just left Chocolate Syrup and formed group called " Love Foundation". I believe Carl Smith was first the tenor. And yes the music did have meaning then and they were extremely talented. It was about lyrics and content back then. Mitch was a big part of why I became a musician. Can someone pass this on to him? I'd appreciate it.

  • @izakteaz When Avco Embassy Records signed CHOCOLATE SYRUP the lead on "Stop Your Crying", was Frankie Avery. When we performed at the Apollo Theatre, the Brooklyn Fox Theatre, the Proctor in N.J etc....I sang lead. I'm the first tenor. L.J.Reynolds and I could be heard on "What's the Matter Baby". Thank You for your interest. I'm looking for a co-author to help with writing the early history of R&B and the begining of Disco. Contact me for further info..............Carl Smith
