Tobias Hume (possibly 1569 - April 16, 1645) was an English composer, viol player and soldier.
Little is known of his life. Some have suggested that he was born in 1569 because he was admitted to the London Charterhouse in 1629, a pre-requisite to which was being at least 60 years old, though there is no certainty over this. He had made his living as a professional soldier, probably as a mercenary. He was an officer with the Swedish and Russian armies.
He was a particular champion of the viol over the then-dominant lute, something which caused John Dowland to publish a rebuttal of Hume's ideas.

Here the foreword of one of his 3 publications (Musicall Humors):

TO THE UNDERSTANDING READER

I Doe not studie Eloquence, or profess Musicke, although I doe love Sence, and affect Harmony: my Profession being, as my Education hath beene, Armes, the onely effeminate part of me, hath beene Musicke; which in mee hath beene alwayes Generous, because never Mercenarie. To prayse Musicke, were to say, the Sunne is bright. To extoll my selfe, would name my labors vaine glorious. Onely this, mu studies are far from servile imitations, I robbe no others inventions, I take no Italian Note to an English dittie, or filch fragments of Songs to stuffe out my volumes. There are mine own Phansies expressed by my proper Genius, which if thou dost dislike, let me see thine, Carpere vel noli nostra, vel ede tua, Now to use a modest shortnes, and a briefe expression of my seffe to all noble spirites, thus, My title expresseth my Bookes Contents, which (if my Hopes faile me not) shall not deceive their expectation, in whose approvement the crowne of my labors resteth. And from henceforth, the stateful instrument Gambo Violl shall with ease yeelde full various and as devicefull Musicke as the Lute. For here I protest the Trinitie of Musicke, parts, Passion and Division, to be as gracefully united in the Gambo Violl, as in the most received Instrument that is, which here with a Souldiers Resolution, I give up to the acceptance of at noble dispositions.

Mijn beroep is, vanwege mijn opleiding: beroepssoldaat.

  • @ernststolz I am saddened to hear that, Ernst. Music is the very soul of life itself. I feel as though I am a man in the wrong place and wrong time! Thank you for continually showing your talent to us on the worldwide Tube. BRIAN

  • Yes Brian, that is quite sad. Also in the Netherlands the status of the arts has been lowered. I suppose it is a worldwide thing. Perhaps someday people will realise they cannot live without...

  • My morning coffee has lead me to the Hume path. I was oddly touched by Hume's curious comment that "the only effeminate part of me, hath been music..." Unfortunately, that idea still prevails in most of America. Our budget has been cut towards the Arts, and sports and science rule. America, if it ever had a tender side, has lost it. For the most part, music is discouraged because "you cannot make a living at it!!!". This video really sparked my ire........not your magnificent playing.

  • Delightful stylish video.

    Many thanks.

I'm on a voyage of discovery!
