Brief discussion to set up of a mixer eq.

I noticed after finishing this that it looks like I am looking down & reading in the beginning... heh, just thinking a bit long I guess.

  • You should never Ever set your EQ levels any more than +3 or +6db, or that will ruin the balance of the overall sound, which is the mistake that most people make when they EQ

  • well everyone's got an opinion on this, the main point of my reference to the this "rule" is that dropping by greater than 6 is the same as raising by 6. you wind up coloring basically the same.

    and thanks for the subscription!

  • Hey Brian

I've been mixing a while now and the main problem I have is how to bring in a track without it thumping in . I set everything to 0db, however when I bring a track in the master level goes straight into the amber & instant a smooth transition. Any hints on how to set the master level or a way around this so all the LED's stay at 0bd throughout? I use the Pioneer DJM 700

  • It's Pete, the little tutor :) - remember if you have one channel at the zero db level and you add another channel at the same level you will have a theoretical +3db result. This is a good question, and one that you will get better with in time.

    I use a djm3000. Basic "easy bass"-

Turn the incoming channel bass down to 9pm. Fade in, even to both channels, at some point (or slowly), i will grab both bass knobs, and turn the outgoing song down to 9, while i turn the incoming back up to 12.

  • well this video is designed for a DJ mixer setup, but the concepts are universal.

What do you mean full enough. Try to express.

  • Great info, Peter! The area I could use some assistance in would be my Graphic EQ. I have lowered certian mid frequencys to assist in echo of big rooms. It sounds OK, but I could use more info on that particular chore. It's a bit of a "Black Art", isn't it?

  • Nice work. very relaxing voice

  • Hes reading what he says out of note cards

  • @raymondleeleggs I agree somewhat with what your saying, but it does sound alright if you in an open area with a block wall behind you, i use levels a little above +3 when i am djing for grad parties alot. I use a cotton cloth to cover the block wall behind you and then set your mixer to stereo, or mono if you use a little bit higher levels such as +6 and what not, but i do agree on what you are saying about the balance that was always a problem with me when i first started out djing.

  • good stuff. well noted.

  • ei pete your video actually had a good contribution on my mixer..haha
