ORIGINAL VERSION
Ignore my comments below! Thanks to SuperRlee for the info where this is a folk song from Okinawa! I tried Google translator and the title 安里屋ユンタ or Asadoya Yunta means "Okinawan" or perhaps People of Okinawa perhaps? Or just maybe, Song of Asadoya? Made some searches and found one that resembles the Roman Tam version! And I love it!

For the ROMAJI lyrics, get it here at http://www.lyricstime.com/rimi-natsukawa-asadoya-yunta-lyrics.html which is different from Roman's version by the way. I blogged about this here at http://www.point2e.com/2010/04/original-confucius-says.html

TITLE
孔子曰 or literally translated as Confucius Says or Preaches or Speaks or Teaches. I will go with Says. Sung by Roman Tam or Lo Man and is the themesong from a famous series in 1993, Man of Wisdom or 金牙大狀 or literally, Golden Tooth Solicitor, starring then very young Ada Choi Siu Fun.

COMMENTS
From the great Roman Tam. He has been dead for years but I miss him. I was disappointed though to find out that the music itself is by Japanese composers, Ryuichi Sakamoto/Choho Miyaka/Katsu Hoshi (so now I wonder is there a Japanese version of this?) but the amazingly deep lyrics written in what I would term as classical chinese (which basically means really hard to understand chinese) more than made up for that disappointment. I wanted to know what the lyrics actually meant. In fact I tried looking for the lyrics but one website misled me by translating the 曰 as Day when it is Yeuk as in teaches or says. Thanks to Kidd who found the lyrics and confirmed it. Then Kidd and Pearl independently translated the lyrics, giving 2 distinct flavours in choices of words used but in the end kinda meant the same. I merged both and chose the more poetic phrases as the lyrics is poetic. You may dispute some lines translated here but in the end I believe they're accurate in context.

The download link to the MP3 version is at the very bottom of this box.

孔子曰非禮勿視孔
Confucius says "see no evil"

Confucius says "hear no evil"

孔子曰非禮勿言
Confucius says "speak no evil"

Confucius says "touch no evil"

人是性本善良
Are humans kind by nature

人還是自幼性本惡
or are they evil from birth?

誰會好一天變壞
Who would one day turn towards evilness

誰會兇惡變善良
who would turn away from evilness to embrace kindness?

要靠你取向決心
It is your decision to make on which path to follow

時辰就到
When the time comes

因果有天報
You will reap what you sow

無慾會感自由
If one feels no desire, one will experience freedom

無求便沒有了爭鬥
If one feels no longing, the competition will cease

無盡的私心愛慾
An endless cycle of selfish love

徒令一世困胡同
will only lead to a lifetime of entrapment

最怕你歪了本心
Beware of corrupting your pure heart

時辰就到
When the time comes

因果有天報
You will reap what you sow

如遊戲
If this were a game,

要勝出請你付出
one would have to sacrifice in order to win

有結果因你付出
In order to reap the benefits there must be effort

守規則
follow the rules

講道理
and be reasonable

如若你
If you desire victory

要勝出不去付出
but you do not wish to put in any effort towards it

要結果不理後果
Or if you wish to win at all cost, disregarding the consequences

懲罰你
you will be punished

忘掉了
Have you forgotten

聽過孔夫子教做人重守禮
that Confucius teaches that a civilized being must follow traditions

你曳曳
You have misbehaved

有老師要你每一天留在課室好失禮
the teacher is detaining you in the classroom every single day. What a disgrace!

  • @xiaochen100 So what's the matter with the japanese root of this song?

  • Anyone has romanized lyrics for this song? I fucking love it, inspires me so much

  • 原來羅文唱的孔子日的ORIGINAL VERSION

  • SUPER

  • 太好听了,请问谁可以帮我翩舞呢?

  • Roman,a professional singer ! Miss him .
