There's nothing especially new about winged rotorcraft. What makes the LiftJET patent unique is the exclusive use of "Descent-Sails" which produce a "slow and safe vertical or near-vertical descent, without power--or even upon the complete destruction of the lifting rotor." Historically, there have been a few high-performance glider wings, such as the BK-1 and Wills Wing, which were considered almost stall-less, with a near-vertical descent. The inventor of another--the Kasperwing--claimed that his zero-forward speed descent was due to the creation of suction over the top of the wing, from the vortex-generating feature of the wings' complex shape. A series of small scale models have shown the viability of equipping the LiftJEt with wing-like Descent-Sails that are capable of providing both a safe, vertical, power-off descent (with or without the assistance of auto-rotation) AS WELL as efficient, high-speed, cross-country capability. Initially, however, the full-size proto-type will be equipped with a more forgiving "parachute-wing" type of Descent-Sail. Custom-designed for the LiftJET, this is a highly cambered, single-surface airfoil. It has an extremely low aspect-ratio, which dampens gyroscopic forces of the rotor and provides pitch stability--and has a deltoid planform. While its top speed is limited, this Descent Sail has the best and most controllable "parachute-descent" of all of the airfoils tried so far. Watch for it in a new flying-model video, coming soon!
