Well, here is another of my amateur attempts. I hope these will get better in time and practice! This is a great record played on a great machine! "My Pretty Girl". The disc has a bad dig in one spot, but I still wanted to share. It gives you an idea as to just how loud an 8-9 is, too!

  • If that's the original Victor Scroll 78 from the late 20's, and not the re-issued version from the early 30's (if it is the re-issue version, you can tell by flipping the record to see if it is backed by a song called "Clementine"), HANG ON to this record. It is one of the most sought-after and valuable 78s by Jean Goldkette.

  • Thank you, yes, I know that! Clementine is one of the BEST Scroll Victors ever in my opinion. This copy is my "victrola" playing copy. I have another that is new old stock that has never seen steel needle play (and never will!).

  • WOW! The disc sounds like the band is in the room with you! It's a good thing most stuck-up Victor executives left in 1926-ish! They could've mucked up this sound even more! Still a great post!

  • I just love this record! I've played this video several times over time. My copy is just shot so its nice to hear it in original format. The Credenza is the best sounding orthophonic they made. Superb tone and amazing bass response for an accoustic machine.

  • Did you know that Glenn Miller arranged for Nat Shilkret. I'm a Shilkret fan. His version of Charleston is really hot.

  • Although those guys drank like fish, and never got sleep, they were superb. Total dedication to detail and tonal quality. Nobody could touch Jimmy Dorsey on alto. Bix was......Nirvana.

  • Bill Challis, the arranger, resented Victor's A&R man forcing the band to play things like "Idolizing" ("Boy, were they ever dogs!") I'm with you, though, I find "Idolizing" kinda charming, and Wilcox does get off with a good one. "My Pretty..." sounds fabulous here, btw. Would that I could be such an amateur!

  • I have a question, my father and I are restoring a Victrola 8-9 and its been stained over. Weare stripping it down, and have the green-aqua color, on the outside part of the door, is there a gold leaf border. We can't find any pictures to show us the detail. Could JazzyBaby help me out. Possibly shoot a video just showing us the detail on the outside of it. if not, atleast put something on the message board to help me out. Thanks

  • Can't wait to get my 8-9 in from Houston! This baby has got some punch!

    Peace Mooo

  • do you guys know that nat shilkret directed the band on this hot number?

  • I think Goldkette had the best of arrangers. And, of course, Bix. Thank you much.
