Actually, RNAi was first discovered in plants because they use it a lot against viral attacks. Fire and Mello simply showed that it is present in animals as well.There was a big controversy over the Nobel Prize because, as some argued in the magazine Nature, the Prize should have also been shared with the plant biologists who discovered RNAi in plants before.
