The Freedom of the City: Models of Urban Engagement & Creativity in the 21st Century at SMU Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, TX
April 9, 2011

Jason Roberts is president and founder of the Oak Cliff Transit Authority, co-founder of Bike Friendly Oak Cliff, and founder of the Better Block project. Roberts is passionate about community building, placemaking, and implementing change in formerly neglected urban areas.

Matthew Stadler is a writer and editor based in Portland, Oregon who has published four novels and compiled several anthologies about art, urban planning, design, and sprawl. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and writing prizes from the Howard Foundation and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Stadler also is engaged with new practices in publishing as a way to generate alternative forms of "public space."

Thompson asks the panel about the need to show examples and educate one's audience in order to have best results. Discussions evolve around determining the success of an event, and Matthew Stadler reads a piece of writing on theme with the session.
