Tai-Chi uses tiny piezoelectric sensors to sense surface vibrations. The sensors are connected to a desktop computer and track up to two objects at once by sensing vibrations. Original story - http://www.newscientisttech.com/article/dn10673. Project homepage http://www.taichi.cf.ac.uk/

Lack of imagination....
What about in the field of security systems.. Certainly an excellent method of detecting WHERE certain types of movement is in a room - on suspended floors.
Also.. A simple method of tracing out large diagrams..industrial app
Just a matter of applying imagination..

You're not understanding me.
This thing definitely isn't as good as an interactive whiteboard - although it's a lot cheaper and simpler, it doesn't serve the purpose as well. Riding a bike is cheaper and simpler, but it doesn't mean we all do it as a car does the job a lot better.

Yes, and they work well in classrooms/boardrooms/lectures and other fixed situations. Why would anyone need a portable interactive whiteboard? What purpose would it be for?

doesn't "a few microphones on a surface" sound simpler?

Electronic whiteboards:
"Two electrically conductive sheets separated by a layer of acetone. When they touch, the surface sheet is deformed, electrical contact establishes the (X,Y) coords."
"An array of wires behind the board interacts with a coil in the stylus tip to give the (X,Y) of the stylus."
"An IR laser is located in each upper corner of the board which sweeps across the surface"
"the marker or stylus sends out both an ultrasonic sound and an infrared light."
