A preview of a 108-minute film, from Belgium, made by Jaco van Dormael.

"First there was nothing. Then there was music and then He made the sun." Jaco van Dormael's The Eighth Day begins by charting the creation of the earth seen through the eyes of Georges (Pascal Duquenne), who has Down's Syndrome. "On the third day He made records, and on the fourth, TV." It is Georges' irrepressible imagination which lies at the heart of van Dormael's original and inspired film.

A chance encounter one night between Georges and overworked businessman Harry (Daniel Auteil) sets the scene for a carefully-crafted examination of love, loss and the rediscovery of life.

That's the most common and logic reaction I can think of my friend, stoned no stoned.

Situations like this can flip rapidly from cute funny and loving, to unjust, hard, cruel and sad.

  • This film hit really close to home. It's hard to find (let alone make) a film that makes you feel so sad yet change your view on life so drastically. We love you, Georges. Harry isn't the only one who knows you're better than the others.

  • I seen this movie some years ago while I was stoned & after smoking a few joints. I am not sure if it was the movie or the weed but I was laughing one moment & crying the next, it was like that throughout the movie, a roller coaster of emotions. That was some time ago, but I have never forgotten this wonderful piece of movie magic, to Georges & Harry characters, love , laugh, cry & live but above all LOVE!

  • My brother has downsyndrome, never really thought of how his life would be like when he grows up. Me and my mother both saw this movie it was so beautiful. :)
