Earlier in March we featured some before and after photos from the Hadrut Regional Hospital in Artsakh, highlighting the renovation work we implemented to transform the aging facility into a modern healthcare center.
Our east coast affiliate, Armenia Fund USA, is currently working on Armenia Fund's second major healthcare initiative in Artsakh, building a hospital in the town of Martuni.
We're building this facility from the ground up to replace the existing hospital, a dilapidated building unfit to serve the healthcare needs of the region. The current hospital has, for years, been unable to serve the local population, according to its executive director, Dr. Grigory Gasparyan.
Despite its limitations, the hospital serves abut 18,000 outpatients and 1,200 patients annually, an impressive figure considering the circumstances. But it's not enough. Most of the facility's patients, however, are often forced to drive up to 60 kilometers to Stepanakert just to receive the most basic of checkups or treatments.
For Dr. Gasparyan, the new hospital promises to "be a great leap forward," fill a critical healthcare need in the region. He's also hopeful that the new hospital will finally allow him to to complete his medical staff by hiring an obstetrician-gynecologist, an ear-nose-throat specialist, and a neuropathologist. "Once our equipment and staff shortages are addressed, we will be able to offer a broad spectrum of medical services, right here in Martuni."
Bravo! So cool.
