My arrangement of "Old Trails".....the Gunsmoke radio theme song, and later TV theme. It was also known as "Boothill." The theme was written by Rex Koury & Glenn Spencer. The original radio version was conducted by Rex Koury. My version is based on the radio program's ending theme song.

The radio series first aired on April 26, 1952 ("Billy the Kid," written by Walter Newman) and ran until June 18, 1961 on CBS. It starred William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon; Howard McNear as Doc Charles Adams; Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell; and Parley Baer as Dillon's assistant Chester Proudfoot.

Here's a link to a great site that has a lot of old radio programs...including the "Gunsmoke" radio programs. It's a free site... http://www.radiolovers.com/ or if you'd just like to go directly to the Gunsmoke shows click here... http://www.radiolovers.com/pages/gunsmoke.htm

Some of us still remember sitting around listening to some great radio programs before television came along! Although the Gunsmoke radio show started after television became a reality...it was still a very popular show! "Theater of the mind!"

The photos are of ghost towns in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, and Montana.

I hope that you enjoy my arrangement of the Gunsmoke theme song! Please feel free to comment, and to "PLEASE RATE" the video..."THANKS!"

  • i like the theme song with the clippity-clop horse sounds in background

  • Hiya David,

The horses didn't have their musical shoes on when I made this arrangement...so I couldn't use them.

    Regards,

    Dwayne

  • this has nothing to do with Gunmoke

  • Hi,

It certainly does have everything to do with the radio show! This was the theme song for the radio show...."Gunsmoke" starring William Conrad as Matt Dillon! Maybe that was before you were born. The radio program was on before they made the TV show with James Arness as Matt Dillon.

    Regards,

    Dwayne

  • DARN, I just can't stop listening to this! Dwayne, we listeners NEED an album!

    Lloyd

  • Hi Lloyd,

Thanks a lot my friend!!! This was the music to one of my favorite radio shows, back in the early '50's! Maybe one day for that album! ;o) Thanks again...Lloyd!!!

    Best Regards Always My Friend,

    Dwayne

  • Hello Seemethere24! Thank you for your very nice reply to my comment. I am glad that I submitted the comment. Very sorry to hear about your loss. I lost both parents within 4 months of each other, so I know what you went through. I have continued to listen to your dad's Old Trails composition over and over. I have both a wav and an mp3 version so I can listen while driving. It is a wonderful, soothing, relaxing melody that stays in my mind long after listening to it. God Bless. Bill

  • @seemethere24 Sad. But then memories are wonderful.

  • @MacGrurry Tyros is a keyboard.. My father used it to make his music.. I am his daughter.. I am glad you didn't blast him - he passed away last year.. Thanks for posting..

  • @mcfrdmn He did.. Thanks for still listening to his music, my dad was awesome at playing music and making arrangements..

  • @Glinkaism1 It does.. sadly my dad passed away (ilovetrains63) so we won't be getting anymore of the beautiful arrangements.. but I'm thankful that people are still drawn to his wonderful music - thank you for your post!

  • Hey! Your arrangement is very, very close to a Rex Koury arrangement near the last of the radio series! Good going!

Has anyone else noticed that the Gunsmoke motif sounds like the chorus from the folksong, "Y'all Come To See Us When You Can."
