I was perusing the Book of Moses today and was struck by the use of the phrase "and he saw god face to face" (1:2). I'm currently taking Biblical Hebrew, and "face to face" is one of these idioms that Hebrew writers LOVE to use when referencing conversations with god (panim bpanim) (in addition to BoM footnotes, cf. Deut 5:4). Interesting stuff. Of course, you can say that JS copied it from the Bible, but then you have to wonder how he knew to use that distinctive phrase.
