Horatio Hornblower: The Fire Ships (Pt. 9)

In the dark days of the Napoleonic War, Horatio Hornblower and the crew of the Indefatigable are put on half rations. But Hornblower is distracted from his hunger by the prospect of a commission, for Captain Pellew has nominated the young sailor for the lieutenants exams.

The Indefatigable soon sails to the African Coast to buy provisions. While ashore, Hornblower and his men are exposed to the Black Plague. Hornblower proposes that they serve their three-week quarantine by sailing another ship back to Gibraltar to rendezvous with the fleet. The mission proves that the real test of a sailors worth comes at sea, not in the examination hall.

P knows he needs to keep Horatio busy. He gets his mind off the death of B by bawling him out. He was eating maggots at the time so is a little jealous. :) You can't trade some experiances in life no matter how much you want to. P knows that so he tries to get his "son's" mind on something else. Works. Horatio had been too exhausted to study. He's lost his self-confidence. Turkey cook lies about the cue. Sweet crew for the cheers. He's a perfectionist and knows he's had little time to study.
