excellent VID. what city is that in the desktop wallpaper?
{{BTW, for most people in the asia-pacific timezone the "hplip" site (though not run explicitly by HP, yeah whatever...) is DOWN most of the daytime! nice bit of MS skullduggery there fo sure!}}
when i go to run hplip.run via "sh" it tells me gcc is a dependency, and to install it, however synaptic shows latest gcc already part of my distro! what to do? any idea?

my own answer after asking Mr G (google! ha ha) :
gcc is only the "C" comp. need g++ as well.
One step missing from this video:
run hp-check -b from terminal. pls install in video!

loL this is a rare driver ment to support many linux distro by compiling it. If you want to compare the windows exe and mac dmg. Those are precompile then u would compare it to deb and rpm file for linux.

there is one difference between dmg or exe and deb/rpm. everything what is on windows or macos i can get in exe or dmg file. on linux some software can be available only as sources.
i'd agree - it gives more configurability, but most of people want idiot-proofness instead.
moreover - people who don't know how to compile software from sources properly will get terrible mess in the system, even bigger than in windows :f
and - actual version of this driver is 2.8.7 upgrade maybe? <:

while i do agree with the idiot proof thing. The difference refering is that Linux is open source and mac/win is closed source. Yes u get the exe/dmg but thats because some1 wants to protect the source code. In Linux u usually get source and if ur lucky (deb/rpm) also. But these are usually for power users to compile. Noobs like u say wont do these. Plus how many linux distro vs win/mac. Thats why they usually release in source code. Cuz they donno which 1 u using.
