On the morning of Princess Diana's funeral, Channel Four television altered their schedule, swapping sport for more than 5 - 7 hours of programmes for younger viewers. Saturday 6th September 1997.

I'm not sure of the announcer's name, if you know leave a comment. Thanks.

  • Not sure if you're getting this mixed up with the day of Diana's funeral (given the announcements about the minute's silence, athletics etc.) but I can remember very well watching some six or seven hours of children's programming on 4 when the funeral occured.

It was a rather nice gesture on their part - I think just about any cartoon import they ever broadcast was given an airing (along with some of their own co-productions i.e. Famous Fred, Prince Cinders etc.)

  • Yes I think I may have mixed this up! I was 9 when this was recorded and I remember feeling happy cause they had 2 episodes of Tintin back to back (the Blue Lotus - my favourite!), however I couldn't remember what day it was!

Thank you for clearing this up!

  • Kids programmes were on Channel 4 from 9am during school hoildays there were 2 slots fristly there was the bigger breakfast then once that was axed T4 took over with an extra T4 slot from 2pm on E4

  • I actually remember this day. I was like 8 and I loved Tintin, so I wanted to go and watch it upstairs on channel 4 but my mum kept mithering me to watch the funeral cos it was a historic moment.

Its amazing that even little clips like this can bring back memories.

  • In Ireland we all got on with our lives and went to school.

  • I remember this morning very well, although I didn't watch Channel 4, like everyone else we were watching the Funeral on BBC1 or ITV. But they got alot of stick for doing this, people wanted a C4 News Special, C4 said no, as they were being alternative in that sense, and were providing kids programmes as no other channel was, which wasn't fair for kids who didn't understand the whole Diana situation. Great upload.

  • hi, i really need to find out what adverts were shown on the day princess dianas death was announced (31st August 1997) and on the day of her funeral (6th September 1997) on any of the terrestrial channels or what programmes where shown. Do you have any idea how I can find this out?

    Thanks so much!

    Josie

  • For sure, the sporting events as well as that day's football league matches were ALL postponed
