Another thing: Only use mushrooms in air if you low trick a ramp and might not make it to the other side. Then lean back and boost.

You got hit by the Bob-Omb because you lost your speed (the Green Shell hit you. At full speed you should be able to escape the blast.

I believe you don't get hit by the explosion from a Bob-Omb if you drag it and it gets hit. I'm not sure though. It is on either MKW or MKDS.

And the TC doesn't work the same as the Star.

TC gives you infinite acceleration, infinite off-road and some extra speed (not very much). So it's not recommended to do some big shortcuts (Mushroom Gorge Gap Jump or Lava shortcut at the Grumble Volcano) with the TC. Just pass it. Only totally utilize it when there is no-one to pass the TC and watch out with the off-road.

I'd group the items in a differently:

Backspam (Defensive): Bananas, Green Shells, FIBs

Boosters: Shrooms, Bullet, Star

Offensive: Bob-Omb, Red Shell, Blue Shell

Special: TC, Shock, POW, Blooper

See, Backspam is used by first. Shells are also part of this. Boosters are you right about, but I won't count TC since you will rather get rid of it than get the shortcut + shock (+ it's not a real booster). Offensive for the items used mainly for attacking other racers. Special for a lower place.
