Pakistan Braces for Feb. 18 Elections

And in Pakistan, member's of the late Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) begin campaigning for the February 18th elections. But another suicide attack in Northwest Pakistan this weekend is a reminder that the political situation in Pakistan is still delicate at best.

Tens of thousands of Benazir Bhutto's followers rallied in southern Pakistan on Saturday. Her Pakistan Peoples Party is relaunching the election campaign that was derailed by her assassination.

[Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's Widower]:
"This system has killed us. This system has killed our BB (Benazir Bhutto). We will change this system. This system is an offender. We have to change this system.

Police estimated the crowd at over 100,000, much larger than similar rallies held while Bhutto was still alive. And the popular chant this time was "democracy is the best revenge".

[Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto's Widower]:
"BB (Benazir Bhutto) knew that even if she lost her life, people like you, her brothers and sisters, and me would complete her mission and take revenge."

Meanwhile, at a different rally on Saturday, a suicide-bomber blew himself up, killing up to 20 people. The victims were members of the opposition Awami National Party (ANP).

Pakistani police said on Sunday they believed Islamist militants on the Afghan border were behind the attack.

[Mohammad Sadiq, Farmer]:
"I think they (the suicide bombers) are the enemy of the country and the enemy of democracy and Islam. They (suicide bombers) can be neither Muslims nor human beings."

Pakistan votes for a new National Assembly and four provincial assemblies on February 18. And while it's not a Presidential election, President Pervez Musharraf's future could be at stake if opposition parties win a majority.
