In order to help others get through the difficulties of having a limb amputated due to cancer, Matt wrote an amazing personal account. Here's my attempt to read his account for the Shorashim Chicago Birthright students at his memorial dedication. Beware, I completely lose my composure during the end.
Phantom pain is not fun or funny. Believe me it is difficult to understand why your foot or ankle or toe etc, hurts like crazy when its not there. And trying to make logic out of it is even worse. If you really have it you know I am right. If you don't, be glad.

Ah. Sorry I was actually thinking of Claudia Mitchells experience with Phantom Limb. Thanks for clearing that up!

@Superfreaxx No. From what I have gathered, it feels like you are wearing a ski boot. The media exaggerates the "technology". Most legs are not powered so it requires A LOT of additional energy to use them and they are uncomfortable. There is a powered knee now but it is very expensive and a little big. They make a big deal about things like C legs but it's crap. God and your parents still cannot be beat. Hands are much further behind though I think.

What it's like? It's the most relieving thing in the world. It's the best pain I've ever experienced. I love pain!

I think what I meant was a decrepit bad functioning leg is not as good as the prosthesis that can replace it giving back better function than one had before. Of course this is subject to the predicament that the person whom lost the leg in the first place was experiencing. That is more in line with what I meant to say.

This teacher is a 14 on a scale of 1- 10... wow!

@tangoseal1 There are no artificial legs that are anywhere near as good as the real thing. For one thing you can't feel anything. You cant feel the sand between your toes in the ocean, you can't get up and go pee in the middle of the night without hopping, crutches or putting a leg on. It isn't as simple as some film clips make it look.

I lost my right leg to diabetes. I had to keep on walking on Charcot Foot, because my wife was sicker than I was. A month after the amputation, she died. My leg was gangrenous, so amputation saved my life, but all alnne, at about 3 AM, I don't see much good. A prosthesis never fits well over the long term.
