I watched it. Greatest love story ever told. I liked the "open ending" because it provokes the audience to rethink this movie... I think it'll let this movie become more reflective... especially after the amazing rollercoaster in emotions of this movie...

Great review! And I agree that scene was really scary. Completely unexpected and uncomfortable

I finally watched this movie and I'm soooo happy I did. One of my top favorite movies. "That scene" was definitely a nail biter for me. I found myself tearing up along with Dano's character.

I just saw it last week and had to come back to see your full review, Eric and I completely agree 'that scene' scared me too and it really could have gone anywhere. The ending was ehhh....

Possibly my favorite movie this year (or in the top 3). There are still a lot of films I haven't seen, yet, like "Safety Not Guaranteed" or "Robot & Frank," etc. But, as a writer, I could really relate to this one and found some similarities between me and Calvin.

    *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I loved this movie. Although, I think it could have gone without a "happy" ending. I think having a sad ending would have made it more emotional. I wish he could have been reading his finished book over video clips of him... I'm not sure. I just thought it could have made for a more emotional movie without the happy ending.

Overall, 9/10. Really good and different and entertaining.

    (SPOILER-ISH)

Really love the climax of the film. It was terrifying and heart-breaking, the act of self-destruction. Watching a writer embrace his inner darkness is one of this year's underrated scenes, I thought..

    (spoiler)

The way i see the film is that the marketing uses the romance part of the movie to sell to audience, but the movie is actually about Dano's character being a recluse who manifests an idea into reality to keep him company while idling/struggling to write a new book.

Also, a worthy mention. Wasn't there a line about girls falling in love with writers because they like a single idea of them? I think it's pretty ironic that he had fallen in love with his own idea.
