I feel sad for Caroline who is alone in the little house with her daughters without Charles around to protect them. The scene at 3.05 where she is holding a gun is terrible. She's scared to death and Laura's dog is screaming with terror.

When the Indian looks at the house he says in French, "You have constructed it very well!" When Charles asks him to sit down he says, "I thank you for your hospitality." When he points to himself it sounds like he says "Soldat du chien" (dog soldier), but I looked it up and there was a real Osage chief known as "Soldat du Chene" (Soldier of the Oak) who famously persuaded his people to avoid a confrontation with settlers on Indian land in 1871. There's a book debating the two translations...

carolyn looks a bit nutty rockin and siging in that chair lol
Yes, from Canada. There is more history to read then you can fit in a lifetime. But in a nutshell, some of the first white people to North America were from France. In fact, they were some of the only white people that the natives respected. They would eventually trade with each other and even join the families. 80% of French Canadians have some sort of native blood to this day. :)

French was the trading language up and down the Mississippi all the way from New Orleans to Canada, and from New York to Montana. Before that land was part of the US, acquired in the Louisiana Purchase, it was called New France. Some tribes did and do speak French with each other, if they didn't know each other's languages.
The French got along better with Indians than Anglos, generally speaking. The world would be a very different place today if they had held on to Canada and Louisiana.
