Dog Training- Remote collar training with Veterinarian

Although Veterinarians have very little education on dog training while going through Vet school, a good bit of the public still relies on them for dog training recommendations.




Many Vets need to be commended for taking their own time to be educated on the various successful ways that dogs can be trained.

Knowing that their recommendations are a reflection on them as professionals, it's obviously sensible to research the successful training methods and trainers available to them in their areas since clients are looking for recommendations on 'successful' training and not on 'unsuccessful' training or trainers. Their are many trainers that fall into both categories in various training styles, so they do their best to differentiate and to get educated.

This Vet has not read the American Veterinary Society Position Statement on punishment for training animals. Do a search "avsab position statement punishment" Shock collars use positive punishment to train.

@fredhassen The link took me to the same vet in same video. Have you approached a veterinary behaviourist for their opinion on animal behaviour and the research related to positive punishment and its side effects? If you contact the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior they should be able to give you some good contacts.P.S. veterinarians are not expert in animal behaviour - physiology, anatomy and pathology definitely. They do extra training to become a behavourist.

I would just like to correct the statement about training using treats adding weight to the dog. If you subtract from their normal meal the amount of treats you will use for the day, there is absolutely no weight gain. Also, the treating doesn't go on forever, just until they learn the behavior. I have to say that the little guy doesn't look very happy though.

Awful video... SMS knows nothing about dog psychology and this vet should be ashamed that he's using such aversive techniques on a teeny puppy. This dog will be absolutely terrified by the time he's 8 months.

@Zurison I would love to put the collar on these people and see how they like it !! I thought torture was to frowned upon, or were the war crimes all tall stories ?? I have been a professional dog trainer for 30+ years and I cannot believe the level of fear displayed in the facial expression of his poor dog. Sir, you ought to be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. Your methods are barbaric and should be illegal. How about positive reward ?? Maybe the dog will enjoy being trained and not tortured.

@fredhassen I'm sorry Fred, must be a bit of a language thing - I don't understand what "I give" means. Or what "REAL" training means? Could you please explain a little clearer for me? Thank you for saying the training you saw is awesome. I hope you are being sincere. The AVSAB Position Statement is easily accessible online so guide the vets there. Have you read it? Google "AVSAB position statement" and you'll find it. Good reference to have.

@fredhassen Thank you Fred. The 2nd vet also has not read the AVSAB position statements on punishment for training animals. Looks impressive - as long as you ignore the signs of stress the dogs are exhibitiing (which most people ignore because they dont' recognize them, head shakes, yawning, excessive panting, ears back, tail down, looking away, pensive movements etc ) If you could achieve the same impressive looking results without the stress shown by the dogs, would you change your method?

Why do people who hate dogs keep on buying dogs, if you hate dogs then don't buy one !!

Perhaps it is some kind of revenge thing ??
