Safeguading our Borders -------
In recent days, we have seen reports of the extraordinary efforts by the Federal Government of the United Arab Emirates to intercept illegal goods passing through the Ras Al Khaimah airport and our nearby waters of the Arabian Gulf.
While I applaud the vigilance of our Federal Leadership, we in Ras Al Khaimah need to do more to make sure that our open trade routes cannot be used for illicit purposes. Most of all, we have to guard against the use of our ports by Iran, a neighbor with nuclear ambitions.
I am proposing a set of safeguards to upgrade our efforts at deterrence and interception.
First, we should provide full the International Atomic Energy Agency and other international law enforcement bureaus full access to our ports so they can detect goods being moved for illicit purposes.
Next, we need to improve security systems at RAK International Airport, Saqr Port and Ras Al Khaimahs Free Trade Zone by installing a sophisticated system that includes web cams to inspect, identify and track all materials that enter and leave Ras Al Khaimah, especially those goods with an Iranian connection. Currently at the port, containers are only reviewed by outside sensors
Third, we need new procedures to insure that any Ras Al Khaimah Government business activity in or with Iran is conducted without the possibility of corruption. It is obvious to me and others that much of the illegal trade that goes through our ports is conducted with the help of United Arab Emirates nationals. This needs to end. We can start by using physical monitors as well as websites that allow for public access to see exactly who our business partners are.
I also believe we would establish strong relationships with the international law enforcement agencies dedicated to fighting smuggling and the illegal flow of arms. This would help make sure that RAK Offshore operates transparently, without the possibility of criminals using it for illicit business operations and money laundering.
As Ras Al Khaimah continues building a stronger economy and more open society, we must do all that we can to make sure our most vital assets, including our ports, are used for the proper and legal purposes.
Bravo. Allah Wayak.
